Recycling Machinery Certified Training

A vital part of the PUWER regulations (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and a commitment to the health and safety of your staff is for all your operators to be trained in the safe use of your equipment.

What is PUWER? (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations)

PUWER is short for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (1999 in Northern Ireland). The regulations deal with the work machinery and equipment operated every day in workplaces and intends to keep people safe wherever equipment and machinery is used at work.

Does Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations apply to you?

PUWER regulations apply to work activities throughout the whole of Great Britain and to installations offshore including gas supply platforms and oil rigs. PUWER applies to:

  • Employers
  • Self-employed and the equipment they use or control
  • Employed persons that supervise or manage the use of equipment operated by others

Mardon recycling always provide training with any new or used equipment we provide and we can do refresher training at any time.

Recycling Machinery Training Objectives we cover include:

  • Advise on use and selection of correct PPE
  • Explanation and demonstration of the equipment
  • Identification of safety features and locations of emergency stops
  • Pre-shift check routine: locking the machine off, visual inspection for damage and condition, start-up/ shut-down procedure
  • Control panel operation
  • Correct operation of the machine to ensure the most efficient use
  • Basic fault diagnosis
  • Call out procedure should it be required

Trojan Fully Auto baler One

Another MARDON Trojan fully auto baler with conveyor system arriving on its new site ready and awaiting installation by our highly trained and proficient engineers. This time it’s at Travis Perkins distribution centre in Northampton. Working in conjunction with DHL Envirosolutions.

The brief was to introduce a more efficient solution to process the site’s recyclable material including cardboard and plastics. The solution we offered was simple; a new Trojan 500V5 which now enables the site to process their recyclable material swiftly, with a much improved yard layout, allowing them to focus on other more PRESSING tasks!

Our goal was to come up an innovative solution for the Travis Perkins backhaul operation. The key to this solution was the processing of cardboard and plastic at their ultra-busy DC once returned. Mardon Machinery supported Envirosolutions by assisting from the design to install.

Trojan Fully Auto baler Two“Mardon’s kept us fully informed throughout the build and delivery process. The delivery and installation then went exactly to the plan that Mardon’s provided. The result being that we are very impressed with the service we received from Mardon’s.” says Simon Wadsworth – Travis Perkins.

“Delivery was dead on time and the installation process provided by engineers couldn’t have gone any better. Due to this Travis Perkins are now extremely happy with the results delivered” says Ashley Smart – DHL Envirosolutions.

The purchase of new equipment is only the start; in order to keep your new machine in the peak of its performance throughout its life it important to keep it well maintained and is where our factory trained engineers who are strategically situated around the UK come into their own. Trojan Fully Auto baler Three

Why every business should be recycling

Recycling is something that every household knows they should do. Whether it is cardboard, plastic or even composting, there are a variety of ways that you can have a positive impact on the environment and the world around you.

However, it isn’t only the general public that should be paying attention to recycling; businesses also have a duty to making sure that they have an eco-friendly waste disposal strategy. To help you on your way we have put together a guide to recycling and why it is important for businesses.

What can you recycle as a business?

When it comes to recycling there are things that you can recycle and things that you can’t. Hazardous waste, for instance, cannot be recycled. The materials that you can recycle are:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Glass
  • Plastics
  • Bricks, rubble, and wood
  • Metal
  • Soil and garden waste

All of these materials can be easily recycled, often on site, which means there really is no reason not to introduce a recycling policy in your business.

If this isn’t enough to tempt you into taking the plunge, then we have put together some of the best benefits of recycling.

It cuts down on waste in landfills

When you recycle products you are stopping them from ending up in a landfill. Instead, these waste materials can be re-used or re-purposed. Not only does this mean that landfills are filling up slower, but that pollution created by these sites is reduced, lowering the damage caused to the environment.

It gives you a green image

The world around us has become a much greener place of late; this means that any businesses who do not have some kind of recycling policy may end up being viewed in a negative light. If you are a business who is aware of their own impact on the environment, then there is a good chance that you will be viewed as a business whom customers want to use and other companies want to trade with. A great benefit for you!

It protects natural resources

One of the biggest benefits of recycling is that it re-uses resources rather than taking resources that can be found around the natural environment. This means that we are cutting down on our use of the raw materials that are steadily running out.

It is easy and simple

When it comes to your employees, recycling is simply a case of popping materials in a bin. You can ensure that appropriate bins are placed around your premises, usually in kitchens or communal areas. These bins can then be emptied on regular intervals and collected by your local authority ready to take away to be recycled. What could be easier than that?

Recycling is a fantastic way to cut down on your waste usage, whether you are a small, medium or large business.

Not only will it benefit the environment, but it can benefit your business too. Whether it is being recognised as a company who takes the environment seriously, or simply feeling great about yourself; there really is no reason not to recycle!

Recycling Balers, finding the right one…

The majority of businesses today generate waste from either production or consumption and many are looking for the right solution to deal with their waste efficiently. Companies we have spoken to over the years tend to ask questions like, what is the best way of managing my waste? How can I save money through waste? Which recycling machine is the best fit for my business?

This is where Mardon Recycling comes in…

Mardon Recycling offers everything you need to achieve your waste and recycling equipment needs. We have a huge range of machinery including recycling balers and compactors to suit any size and budget requirements.

They will carry out a full waste audit looking at the waste types you currently have, how you manage them and also looking at future possibilities. Our team will analyse your site layout and review your current waste costs. Once these factors have been considered in full, you will receive your recommendation of the correct size of recycling baler or compactor for your business.

Our goal is to reduce your waste cost by at least 30%, however the majority of companies accomplish more, with staff time efficiency savings and rebates on materials. If you have general waste costs reduction as your goal, Mardon Recycling can assist in offering where possible, alternative solutions which may not require moving from your current waste provider.

HEALTH & SAFETY MADE EASY

Protect your employees and your business with these baling safety tips …

Whether you use a vertical or horizontal cardboard baler, a mill size baler or a compactor, here are some simple steps you can take to protect your employees and impress any Health & Safety Inspector.

SSOW
Employers are required by law to implement and record SSOW – Safe Systems of Work – also known as safety procedures, method statements, health & safety practices etc. Basically, detailed instructions given to employees to enable them to work safely.

SSOW are particularly important if your employees work with hazardous materials or machinery. The process should be pain-free and, once in place, easy to implement and monitor. Here’s how…

1. Carry out a risk assessment

Identify: What might harm people? What are the risks: electrical, physical, ergonomic?
Evaluate: What’s needed to eliminate risk? Training, access to instruction manuals, protective clothing, etc.

Implement: Carry out training, issue clothing, book a regular machine inspection, display signs, etc.

Monitor: Maintain records of training and inspection dates, keep an incident log, etc.
Review: Is the plan working? Have there been any accidents? Why? Do you need to revaluate?

2. Print and display signs

This is easy, effective and impressive. Consider some or all of the following, depending on your risk assessment results:

  • No Smoking
  • Do not climb in
  • Dangerous machinery
  • Confined space
  • Do not remove guards
  • Only trained and authorised personnel to use this machine

Display a list of trained/authorised employees and, for extra brownie points, the date of training.

3. Basic training for operators

as well as demonstrating and teaching operation of the machinery, according to the manufacturers’ guidelines, encourage operators to follow these rules – have them read and sign a rules sheet, so you can produce evidence to show the steps taken to safeguard your employees:

1. Check work area for hazards, such as spillages or obstructions.
2. Wear protective clothing: glasses, gloves and steel toe capped boots.
3. Follow manufacturer’s operating instructions and safety procedures.
4. Inspect the baler to ensure no obvious defects, broken locks or tags.
5. Keep all liquids away from the controls.
6. Never load unauthorised materials or objects into the baler.
7. Stand away from the baler during compaction.
8. Take care when using baling wire, ensure cut end faces down. Keep all cutting tools away from the baler.
9. Prevent injury to back, legs and feet by taking care while unloading bales, requesting assistance or a pallet when necessary. And follow the health and safety rules for moving and lifting heavy loads,
10. After operation, clean the baler, the floor area and remove the key from the baler’s switch.

Of course, best practices will vary from one business to another, and you’ll make sure your SSOW suits the individual needs of yours, but if you require any expert advice regarding the safe stationing and operation of your baler, please give Jen at Mardon a call – we’re here to help keep your employees safe, and your inspectors happy!
